A little preparation can make the time fun for you and\nyour dog. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Flea &amp; Tick Prevention<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fall is peak time for\ntransmission of lyme disease from adult ticks. Fall is also when many pets\nbecome infested with fleas. There are a variety of products on the market including\ntopical and oral options. Talk to your veterinarian about what product is best\nfor you pet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Internal Parasites<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Hunting dogs are at higher risk to contract roundworms and\nhookworms from the environment. These parasites can then be passed to people.\nHeartworm prevention, such as Interceptor\u00ae, deworms for these parasites and\nshould be given once a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Vaccinations<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure your pet is current on vaccinations such as\nRabies, Lyme and Leptospirosis. Hunting dogs are at increased risk of these\neasily preventable diseases. Also, if your dog is going to be hunting with a\ngroup of other dogs, its distemper combination, bordetella and influenza\nvaccinations should be up-to-date. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Exercise<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like a person, if a dog is not properly conditioned\nbefore working hard, they can suffer from performance injuries such as pulled muscles,\nsore joints and strained or torn ligaments. Gradually increase your pet\u2019s\nactivity over a couple weeks prior to the start of hunting. In addition, be\nsure to allow your pet time to rest while hunting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Food<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Overweight pets are at an increased risk for performance\ninjuries as well as exhaustion. Make sure your pet is an ideal weight prior to\nthe start of hunting season. For pets that are more than a couple pounds\noverweight safe weight loss needs to be done gradually over many months.\nContact your veterinarian to make a weight loss plan for your pet. During\nhunting, a dog\u2019s calorie intake increased. Feeding small frequent meals can\nhelp your pet keep up to the demands of hunting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Paws<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Many dogs can wear down their paw pads and form painful\nulcerations. Keep protective boots on hand for your dog to wear. Dogs can\nsuffer from cuts and debris in their eyes, especially in grass and wooded\nareas. Keep an eye saline solution with you, along with some bandaging material\nto stop bleeding until you can get to your veterinarian. Your veterinarian can\nhelp you put together a first aid kit for your pet or you can purchase a\npremade kit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Senior Hunters<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior dogs can often remain active and healthy with the\nhelp of your veterinarian. Senior pets benefit from a daily glucosamine\nsupplement such as Dasuquin. This supplement needs to be started at least a\nmonth prior to hunting if your dog is not taking it regularly year round.\nSenior dogs do well on pet pain medication started a day prior to the hunt and\ncontinued daily. The goal is to control the pain before it builds up. If your\npet is already on a daily pain medication your veterinarian can prescribe\nadditional medications to help during hunting.
